The garden of University House has never been complete. It has been planted, abandoned, forgotten and partially restored. What may appear as deterioration instead reveals that a garden, unlike a building, cannot be fixed in time. It is always becoming something else.The proposal rejectss the restorative premise that a correct version of the garden exists somewhere in the archive, awaiting recovery. Its values are dispersed across its successive periods. The nineteenth-century gardenesque layout, socialist-era interventions and gravel covering the historic paths remain simultaneously inscribed in the ground. Together, they bear witness to both an ecological succession and a historical succession of owners, functions and uses. What lies below is the fragmented memory of the place, a repository of meanings layered into the garden’s fabric. The proposal therefore works with the inherited, anachronic atmosphere of a pocket urban forest concealed from public view: a “quasi-objective” phenomenon emerging between the perceiving body and the environment through what Gernot Böhme calls the “ecstasies of things.
